Moovly is a startup that aims to democratize the creation of animated videos. The company offers a SaaS platform that allows anyone to easily create multimedia content using a library of media objects: animations, sounds, video clips… For this library, Moovly relies on a community of multimedia experts, designers and artists. This session tells the story of a multimedia startup from idea to a platform daily used by thousands of users. We’ll also zoom in on the business and technical challenges encountered, as well as the big usability question: how do you get an inexperienced crowd to create great animated content they’re proud enough about to share?

The imagination of the creative artist goes often beyond ‘realistic’ laws. Crossroads need to be discovered, tools to be implemented for the artist to let them penetrate to the ‘real’. The trans-disciplinary interface between the artistic research domains (architecture – music - nature) creates on one hand the realisation that liberated design conditions are crucial and on the other hand the intention to jointly labor an artistic design in response to this realisation.
In a trans-discipline set-up, a synaesthesia between spatial and temporal experiences is created. This condition bring us to the virtuality (‘illusion’) as a useful factor in artistic research. Virtuality can do for art what hypothesis does for science.
The number of publications about Robots has been growing exponentially over the last years. The focus used to be on the technical side, but lately people are wondering about the social implications of having Robots around. We are right to do so. The way we interact with each other and the way we surrender our lives to technology right now, will define the way we look at Robots in the future, and even more important: it will define how Robots will look back at us. Right now, we are all raising tomorrow’s Robots.

You’ve read how to make a responsive design for a single page start-up site, you’ve seen how a multi-million dollar company does it, but how can you do it in your normal project? We created this webshop with a budget, not with a load of money, and without good enough examples. We’ve bumped into a lot of problems/challenges and we want to share it with you, giving our view on design and front-end code.
CSS animations are a powerful option to add design details to your work. When used well, motion can bring delightful moments to a user interface and improve interactions. In this session we’ll look at CSS in a whole new light and use it, plus a little JavaScript, to craft interactions that bring our web-based work to life.
Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) allow users to interact with games or other software applications by measuring and analyzing EEG activity. In this session we will explore the current potential and limitations of BCI technology and present some design guidelines for interactive applications. Interested participants can try out some demo applications afterwards.
The message of the session is to inspire young creatives to set up their idea, and create a structured business out of it. A good idea isn’t enough.
Through a couple learnings from our start-up, we would like to inform about the challenges, great moments, fucked-up moments and things they should be careful with.
An example is the relation with potential investors, and how to manage it.
From a great idea to an unknown market, our start-up story can be visualised as a realistic view of a great, fun, dynamic mini-company.
Sakri has put together a collection of what can be done with text on the HTML5 Canvas using JavaScript. Drawing from nearly 15 years of coding visual effects, the bag of tricks is heavy. This session will start with the basics and move on with increasing complexity; each demo will be accompanied with key concepts, snippets of code and ideas for further exploration. To avoid any confusion or prerequisites, the demos are all built from scratch with minimal use of external libraries or frameworks. While the talk is centered around text effects, the techniques presented are certainly applicable outside the world of text effects and Canvas.

Game audio has come a long way when measured by quality and advancements in technology, but still trails other art forms when it comes to artistic expression. Modern technology now makes it easier than ever to create high-quality production audio but does nothing to advance the greater goals of high artistry and meaningful work.
In order to progress artistically as an expressive medium, game audio will take cues from other aesthetic points of reference such as film, theatre, performance art, Musique Concrete, etc., while finding its own unique identity derived from the fact that in a game, unlike those other art forms, events rarely unfold the same way every time the game is played.
This presentation will take an in-depth examination of how we can drive deeper emotional resonance into our creations and push into new musical and sonic territories by focusing on the principles of audio aesthetics and artistic techniques from other media. How might we apply those devices to game audio design? How might we focus in on sound as a strong storytelling agent? Most importantly, how do we start thinking outside of the box and exploring unorthodox paths in order to create truly remarkable works of art?

As motion graphics is becoming ever more accessible in terms of skill requirement and budget, creatives now have the power to unleash their inner geek and break out from classic animation techniques. Designers and animators have the opportunity to not only find alternative ways to execute projects, but new ways of presenting visuals and motion.
While motion graphics has always been a mash-up of creativity and technology, Fred Huergo, Motion Graphics Lead and VFX Supervisor at international creative agency SuperHeroes, argues that the future lies in the marriage of these two disciplines and will even reveal his recipe to generate 3D pasta using mathematical formulas.

Till recently our product CHILI Publisher - an online document editor - was only available as a Flash application. Transitioning to HTML5 seemed like an impossible task, especially with specifics like text layout, font rendering and 3D visuals. After biting the bullet, and little less than 2 years later, CHILI Publisher’s HTML5 version integrated seamlessly and transparently into any web-to-print solution. Come and have a look behind the scene on how we successfully tackled this challenge; What problems did we have to overcome? Which decisions did we make, and why? And… what is our strategy for the future development of our software?
