In his presentation Ville Koskela, the lead Flash programmer at Rovio Entertainment, will go briefly through the history of Angry Birds and then focus on this mobile number one hit’s journey to Facebook with these fundamental questions: Why was Flash player 11 technology initially selected for the project? When Angry Birds uses 2D graphics how were the GPU accelerated Stage3D graphics utilized to improve the game’s performance? The spectrum of different hardware, web browsers and network connections out there is really wide so how was it made sure that both the quality standards of the company and the expectations of the fans were met?
What are in general good practices in tracking the quality aspects of a game run on a web browser? Any Facebook game should integrate into Facebook UX nicely but what were the main problems with integration and how were they solved? With the popularity of the Angry Birds brand it was expected that the game will get millions of daily users over a really short period of time. What to take into account when developing games for this big audience? PostPanic will be talking about their unorthodox approach to working on both commercial and non-commercial projects. As a small studio with a permanent team that has worked together for a long time, they made the choice not to adopt many of the traditional post-production company methods.
This has allowed members within the team to mould their creative individuality and really contribute to a project with their own style and creative signature. It is a risky strategy but one that has paid off for the collective. Matthijs and Jeroen will illustrate this process by showing examples from recent projects. By taking a look behind the scenes and processes at work, it will become clear how each person in the team plays an important role in the final visual piece. So expect lots of eye candy but also a better understanding of how our studio works and why we are happy to work the way we do.

You know it’s time to redesign when your design is becoming your own bottleneck — incapable of reflecting your changes, values and the new direction of your enterprise. If your list of necessary UX improvements is getting longer, yet you can’t meaningfully integrate them in your current design, that’s a clear sign that something has to change. That’s exactly the issue Smashing Magazine’s team faced before it decided to redesign Smashing Magazine.
In this talk Vitaly Friedman, the founder and editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine, provides practical insights into the responsive redesign process of Smashing Magazine’s new site. The talk explains the decisions made and rejected along the way and describes how designing in the browser using only HTML5 and CSS3 is both necessary and powerful in the responsive design process.

I will talk about some of the processes, structures and activities we have put in place (some have worked better than others) in an effort to win the never ending battle against the evil forces of burnout, boredom and obsolescence.
