The humble border-radius

Border-radius is humble. It will never show off. Everyone and their cat think they know it well, but it won’t stand up to defend itself. Instead, it will smirk quietly while everybody is busy paying attention to its more flashy siblings, confident in its own skin. border-radius might seem superficially simple, but it can be very powerful.

However, its powers are reserved only for those who know how to unleash them. Under its superficial simplicity it hides some of the most complex algorithms in CSS. Intrigued? Come to this talk, and prepare to be surprised.

Evidence based game design // Adictiz: Social games company

Geoffrey Hamon

Within the health care sector, there is an increasing need for insight in the use and effectiveness of serious games. From the game industry, there is a need for an overview of all challenges health care organizations are facing, for which game developers can offer solutions via serious games.

To that end, an online platform is set up, which offers a collection of knowledge that is translated into a form that can be absorbed by the target group. That knowledge comes from interviews in the field as well as from a compilation of recent scientific publications and research projects on used methodologies in effectiveness research of serious games, best practices and directions regarding serious game design. Summarizing documents are drawn up, as well as outline cards, templates, manuals and other tools, which facilitate both sectors to efficiently and constructively work together and communicate.

The platform also contains a forum where both sectors can consult on new assignments. The project is in preparation since September 2012 and, after approval of the grant application, its actual execution starts in September 2013, and this for a period of two years.

What should robots look like tomorrow

The answer is of course: awesome. The form of today’s robots mainly follows their functions, and if they try to get an emotional response it is most of the time endearment and confidence.

Yet in the world of movies we get a lot of other emotional responses from robots. So why is there such a big gap between the real world and the world we dream about in stories and films? And what are we going to do about that?
